The Best Sales People

Buckingham Palace has now been turned in to something of a museum and tourist attraction. But could you imagine in the days of Napoleon and the Battle of Waterloo, that Buckingham Palace was the venue for a Fine Art Auction, by the extraordinary Mr Harry Phillips?
Harry Phillips set up his company in 1796. Harry understood the art of showmanship in sales and understood the importance of “setting the scene”. In order to create ‘differentiation’ for his Art Auction House,
Mr Phillips held highly creative promotional events including one at Buckingham Palace itself.
Harry was aiming high and built a customer base that included the likes of Beau Brummel, Marie Antoinette and Napoleon. In fact he still holds the unique record as the only man to hold an auction at the prestigious Buckingham Palace. Harry Phillips’ success was rapid and long-lasting.
Mr Phillips can definitely be included in any list of the best salesmen throughout history – a man who intimately understood how to sell to wealthy individuals.
After a century of successful sales, Harry Phillips’ company is now known as Phillips de Pury & Company. His legacy is an auction house and art dealership, with offices across the world including New York, London, Geneva, Berlin, Brussels, Los Angeles, Milan, Munich and Paris.
