The Best Sales People

The King of Madison Avenue - David Ogilvy CBE

 Born June 23, 1911– Died July 21, 1999
An Oxford-Educated Englishman, David Ogily started his sales life as a prolific salesman of the now-famous AGA cooker.  His work at AGA drew him to work for an advertising agency in the 1930s, where he was sent for a short visit to the USA that changed his life and the whole advertising industry.

Ogilvy''s first work in advertising was his innovative use of "Direct Mail", so often neglected by advertising agencies and described by Ogilvy as "My Secret Weapon".

During WWII Ogilvy worked for British Intelligence which no doubt had a major effect upon how Sales Terminology came about.

In the 21st Century, we stil refer to 'Campaigns' when we talk about a sales project, and many of the terms and methodologies used both in the war effort of 1939-45 and all successful Sales projects thereafter have been devised using a blend of the "Gallup" process and military thinking.

Ogilvy was a strong-minded and outspoken individual.  He was one of the early pioneers of what would now be termed 'demographic analysis'.  Ogilvy didn't just know what was right, he came up with ideas, tested the ideas and found which worked and which did not work.

David Ogilvy's campaigns brought immense success to his clients alongside wealth and fame for himself.  Perhaps the overriding philosophy that defined Ogilvy was his insistence that advertising is not an art but a means to make sales.
